recreation
With a 3,200-acre aquatic playground and a nationally recognized university, as well as other parks and playhouses, Buena Vista County abounds in wonderful things to see and do.
Outdoor Recreation
The fourth largest natural lake in Iowa is located in Storm Lake. The opportunity for outdoor recreation is limitless in BV County, from boating and fishing on the lakes and streams to hiking and biking in the many parks. Public boat access is readily available. The Awaysis Project boasts state of the art indoor and outdoor waterparks, a 40 foot lighthouse with observation deck, beach area and playground. The Lake Trail surrounding the northern shore of Storm Lake runs for 5 miles and is perfect for biking, jogging or taking a stroll. The Inkapaduta Canoe Trail offers a lazy river ride down the Little Sioux River. A county-wide trail is being proposed to connect all of the attractions.
Hunting, fishing and camping are all available at various places throughout the county. Campgrounds in Storm Lake and Albert City can accommodate a weekend getaway. Picnic areas and playgrounds are just waiting for families to pack a lunch and play the day away. Volleyball, tennis and basketball courts are ready for a pick-up game. Experience the wide open spaces and get back to nature!
Cultural Activities
Buena Vista University brings an exceptional variety of speakers and cultural events to the area. Various musical ensembles from around the world have performed on the BVU stage. Past speakers include Margaret Thatcher and George Bush.
The annual Independence Day celebration in Storm Lake, the Star Spangled Spectacular, brings to town a number of performers from around the nation, and also many local groups. Area schools provide concerts and theatre, and the Buena Vista Community Theatre performs each year at the Roxy in Alta, a refurbished theatre in the heart of the community. And, of course, dinner is available at the area's many fine restaurants, featuring everything from home-style cooking to ethnic cuisine.
Diverse Retail Environment
A strong retail district makes Storm Lake incredibly self-sufficient. It isn't necessary to travel to find everything one needs to make a house a home. Everything is here and the staffs from each store are ready to help you find everything you will need, from furniture to décor to construction needs. Local merchants also offer a variety of clothing, gifts, and specialties. It's easy to feel right at home when surrounded with stores that serve your shopping needs.
